Tips & Hints

Sports & Hobbies

🌟

You don't need to be an Arabic expert to teach your child. Consistency, encouragement, and making it fun are far more important than perfection. These tips will help you feel confident and prepared.

🏫 For Teachers

  • This topic is highly motivating — pupils love talking about their interests. Use this enthusiasm to drive writing.
  • Some sports have direct Arabic translations, others are borrowed from English. Both are valid and useful.
  • Link with PE by introducing Arabic commands during physical activities.
  • Differentiate by providing word banks for less confident writers and extension challenges for stronger pupils.

🏠 For Parents

  • Learn the Arabic name for your child's sport or hobby — use it when talking about their activities.
  • When watching sport on TV, try to say the sport name in Arabic.
  • Ask your child about their hobbies in Arabic: "ما هوايتك؟" — even a simple answer is great practice.
  • If your child attends clubs or sports sessions, discuss them using Arabic words for the activity.

💡 Learning Hints & Memory Tricks

  • كرة القدم (kuratu l-qadam) literally means "ball of the foot" — football! كرة السلة literally means "ball of the basket" — basketball!
  • أمارس (umaarisu - I practise/do) is used for sports: "أمارس السباحة" — while ألعب (al'abu - I play) is used for games.
  • ممتع (mumti' - fun/enjoyable) comes from the root متع meaning "to enjoy" — use it to describe any activity you find fun.
