Tips & Hints

My Family

🌟

You don't need to be an Arabic expert to teach your child. Consistency, encouragement, and making it fun are far more important than perfection. These tips will help you feel confident and prepared.

🏫 For Teachers

  • Be sensitive to diverse family structures — use "the people who look after you" alongside traditional terms.
  • Family vocabulary is deeply personal and motivating — children love talking about their own families.
  • Display a "Family Words" wall poster that children can refer to throughout the term.
  • Encourage children to use these words at home — real-world practice cements vocabulary.

🏠 For Parents

  • This is a wonderful topic to practise at home — every family member gets an Arabic name!
  • Try using "Ummi", "Abi", "Akhi", "Ukhti" at home as nicknames — children find this great fun.
  • Help your child complete their family tree in Arabic — it is a lovely keepsake.
  • If your family speaks Arabic, this is a great chance to connect school learning with home language.

💡 Learning Hints & Memory Tricks

  • "Ummi" (my mum) — the "mm" sound is just like the English word "mummy"!
  • "Abi" (my dad) — short and sweet, just like the English "a-bee"!
  • "Jaddi" and "Jaddati" both start with "Jadd" — that is the root word for grandparent!
