Yunus (يونس) is an Arabic name derived from Hebrew, meaning 'dove' or 'pigeon.' The name carries symbolism of peace, gentleness, and purity in both Islamic and Judeo-Christian traditions. The root is believed to come from the Hebrew word 'yonah' (יונה), which similarly means dove. In Islamic tradition, the dove symbolizes innocence, peace, and divine blessing, making this name spiritually significant across multiple religious contexts.
Yunus originates from Hebrew roots but has been widely adopted in Arabic and Islamic cultures for centuries. The name became particularly prominent in the Arab world through Islamic tradition and the Quranic figure of the Prophet Yunus (Jonah).
Yunus holds profound significance in Islamic culture as it is the name of one of the important prophets mentioned in the Quran—Prophet Yunus, also known as Jonah in English. The name is revered throughout the Arab and Muslim world as a symbol of faith, patience, and divine mercy. It has been borne by numerous notable historical figures, scholars, and contemporary personalities, cementing its status as an honored and respected name across Islamic civilization.
