Lesson Plans
Reading Comprehension and Summary
Skimming and Scanning Arabic Texts
Lesson Objectives
- Skim a text to identify the main topic quickly
- Scan a text to find specific information
🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)
Speed challenge: display a text for 30 seconds — students write down the main topic without reading every word.
Main Activities
- 1Teach the difference between skimming (quick overview for gist) and scanning (searching for specific information)
- 2Skimming practice: skim 3 short texts and write a one-sentence summary of each
- 3Scanning practice: answer specific questions by scanning a longer text for key information
- 4Vocab cards worksheet: write reading strategy vocabulary and instructions in Arabic
Resources Needed
⭐ Extension Challenge
Find an Arabic text online and practise both skills: write a summary (skimming) then answer 5 specific questions (scanning).
Inference and Deduction
Lesson Objectives
- Infer meaning from context in Arabic texts
- Make deductions about character, mood, and intention from language clues
🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)
Reading between the lines: read a short text — what can you guess that is NOT directly stated?
Main Activities
- 1Teach inference skills: looking beyond literal meaning — what does the writer imply? What clues are there?
- 2Read a text about a student who does not directly say they are unhappy — students identify the clues
- 3Practice: answer inference questions for 2 different texts — "How do you think the character feels? What evidence supports this?"
- 4Writing practice: write a paragraph where the reader must infer the writer's mood — do not state it directly
Resources Needed
⭐ Extension Challenge
Read a short Arabic story and write a character analysis based on inferences — what is the character really like?
Summarising Arabic Texts
Lesson Objectives
- Identify the main ideas in a text
- Write a concise summary in Arabic
🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)
Summary challenge: can you summarise your weekend in just 2 Arabic sentences? Practise being concise.
Main Activities
- 1Teach summarising steps: 1) Read the whole text, 2) Identify the main idea of each paragraph, 3) Write key points, 4) Combine into a summary
- 2Model summarising: read a 3-paragraph text together and create a summary as a class
- 3Independent practice: summarise a different text in 4-5 sentences
- 4Tracing worksheet: write summary sentences in neat Arabic script
Resources Needed
⭐ Extension Challenge
Read two texts on the same topic and write a combined summary that includes information from both.
Reading Comprehension Assessment
Lesson Objectives
- Demonstrate reading comprehension skills across multiple question types
- Answer questions at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels
🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)
Question type review: what types of reading questions exist? Literal (in the text), inferential (between the lines), evaluative (your opinion about the text).
Main Activities
- 1Complete a full reading comprehension assessment: read a text and answer 12 questions
- 2Questions include: true/false, multiple choice, short answer, inference, and summary writing
- 3Self-mark and discuss: identify which question types were easiest and hardest
- 4Picture vocab activity: create a reading strategies reference poster with Arabic examples
Resources Needed
⭐ Extension Challenge
Write your own reading comprehension text and questions for a classmate to complete.
