Topic Sentences and Paragraph Structure

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)
Topic sentence or not? Display 8 sentences — students decide which would make good topic sentences and why.
Main Activities
- 1Teach paragraph structure: جملة رئيسية (topic sentence) + جمل داعمة (supporting sentences) + جملة ختامية (concluding sentence)
- 2Model writing a paragraph: start with a topic sentence about "My School", add 3 supporting details, end with a conclusion
- 3Guided practice: write a topic sentence for 5 different topics, then develop one into a full paragraph
- 4Vocab cards worksheet: write paragraph structure vocabulary with definitions and examples

Thin vs thick paragraphs: show a "thin" paragraph (topic sentence only) and a "thick" one (with details). Discuss the difference.

- 1Teach example phrases: على سبيل المثال (for example), مثلاً (for instance), بالإضافة إلى ذلك (in addition to that)
- 2Model adding supporting details to a topic sentence: 3 different ways to develop the same idea
- 3Practice: take 4 topic sentences and develop each with 2-3 supporting sentences
- 4Writing practice: write a detailed paragraph about your favourite hobby with examples and reasons

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)
Sentence shuffle: give students a paragraph cut into individual sentences — can they reassemble it in the correct order?
Main Activities
- 1Teach advanced connectives: علاوة على ذلك (furthermore), من ناحية أخرى (on the other hand), بالرغم من ذلك (despite that), نتيجة لذلك (as a result)
- 2Cohesion analysis: read a well-written paragraph and identify every connective — discuss how they create flow
- 3Practice: rewrite a paragraph that has no connectives, adding appropriate linking words
- 4Tracing worksheet: write advanced connective phrases in careful Arabic handwriting
