Sustaining a Conversation

50–55 minutes

Lesson Objectives

  • Maintain a conversation for 2+ minutes on a familiar topic
  • Use conversation fillers and strategies

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Conversation endurance: pairs see how long they can sustain an Arabic conversation without stopping. Time it!

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach conversation fillers: يعني (I mean/like), طبعاً (of course), في الحقيقة (actually/in fact), بصراحة (honestly)
  2. 2Teach conversation strategies: ask a follow-up question, give an opinion, add a detail, change the topic smoothly
  3. 3Structured conversation: give students a topic and a list of questions — practise sustaining a 3-minute conversation
  4. 4Vocab cards worksheet: write conversation fillers and strategies with example usage

Responding to Unexpected Questions

50–55 minutes

  • Buy thinking time using appropriate phrases

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Hot seat: one student in the hot seat — class fires unexpected questions in Arabic. Can they answer all of them?

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach thinking-time phrases: هذا سؤال جيد (that's a good question), دعني أفكر (let me think), أعتقد أن (I think that)
  2. 2Random question generator: students pick questions from a hat and answer immediately
  3. 3Pair work: one student asks 5 unexpected questions, the other must answer without preparation
  4. 4Writing practice: write answers to 8 unpredictable questions — focus on giving full, detailed answers

Agreeing and Disagreeing Politely

50–55 minutes

  • Express agreement and disagreement using appropriate Arabic phrases
  • Give opinions with justification in conversation

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Opinion scale: read controversial statements — students stand on a scale from "أوافق تماماً" to "لا أوافق أبداً".

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach agreement phrases: أوافق (I agree), بالتأكيد (certainly), أنا أتفق معك (I agree with you), صحيح (correct/true)
  2. 2Teach disagreement phrases: لا أوافق (I disagree), أعتذر لكن (I'm sorry but), لا أعتقد ذلك (I don't think so), ليس بالضرورة (not necessarily)
  3. 3Structured debate: pairs discuss a topic — one agrees, one disagrees, then switch
  4. 4Tracing worksheet: write agreement and disagreement phrases in Arabic script

Role Play Scenarios

55–60 minutes

  • Participate in role plays in different settings
  • Adapt language for different conversational contexts

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Role play warm-up: 60-second spontaneous role plays — teacher calls out a scenario, pairs act it out immediately.

Main Activities

  1. 1Set up 4 role play stations: 1) At a restaurant, 2) At school meeting a new student, 3) At the doctor, 4) Shopping at the market
  2. 2At each station: students have a scenario card with their role and must sustain a 2-minute conversation
  3. 3Rotate through all 4 stations, adapting language for each context
  4. 4Picture vocab activity: illustrate each role play scenario with key vocabulary and phrases used
