Introduction to the Past Tense

Lesson Objectives

  • Understand how Arabic past tense verbs are formed
  • Conjugate a verb in the past tense for هو and هي

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Yesterday challenge: what did you do yesterday? List 10 activities in English — we will learn to say them in Arabic.

Main Activities

  1. 1Explain that past tense in Arabic uses suffixes (endings) rather than prefixes — contrast with present tense
  2. 2Introduce the base form: كتبَ (he wrote) — the "he" form is the simplest and the dictionary form
  3. 3Show the feminine form: كتبَت (she wrote) — just add ت
  4. 4Practice conjugating 5 common verbs in هو and هي forms: كتب، ذهب، أكل، قرأ، لعب

Full Past Tense Conjugation

50–55 minutes

Suffix snap: teacher calls out a pronoun, students write the past tense suffix on their whiteboards.

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach the complete past tense suffix system: كتبتُ (I), كتبتَ (you m.), كتبتِ (you f.), كتبَ (he), كتبَت (she), كتبنا (we), كتبتم (you pl.), كتبوا (they m.)
  2. 2Colour-coded conjugation table: fill in the table together as a class
  3. 3Pair practice: take turns conjugating different verbs for all pronouns
  4. 4Writing practice worksheet: conjugate 4 verbs fully and use each in a sentence

The Three-Letter Root System

Lesson Objectives

  • Identify root letters in past tense verbs
  • Understand how roots carry core meaning

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Root detective: display 5 groups of related Arabic words — students try to identify the 3 shared letters in each group.

Main Activities

  1. 1Explicitly teach the root system: ك-ت-ب = writing, د-ر-س = studying, ع-ل-م = knowing
  2. 2Show word families: كتب (he wrote), كتاب (book), مكتبة (library), كاتب (writer) — all from ك-ت-ب
  3. 3Root identification activity: find the root letters in 12 given verbs
  4. 4Tracing worksheet: write out root letters and their derived words with careful letter formation

Telling Stories in the Past Tense

Story starters: teacher gives the first sentence of a story in past tense — students continue with the next sentence.

Main Activities

  2. 2Read a model text: a short account of a school trip in past tense — identify all past tense verbs
  3. 3Guided writing: write an account of "ماذا فعلت أمس؟" (What did you do yesterday?) using 8+ past tense verbs
