Negating the Present Tense with لا

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

True or false about you: teacher reads statements — students say "نعم" or "لا" and correct the false ones.

Main Activities

  1. 1Introduce لا (la) as the negation particle for present tense: أكتب → لا أكتب (I write → I don't write)
  2. 2Emphasise simplicity: just add لا before the verb — nothing else changes
  3. 3Pair activity: one student says a positive sentence, partner says the negative version

Negating the Past Tense with لم and ما

  • Use ما as an alternative past negation

Alibi game: you are suspected of a crime! Deny everything: "لم أفعل!" (I didn't do it!)

  1. 1Introduce لم (lam) for past negation — note: لم is followed by the present tense form (jussive): لم أكتب (I did not write)
  2. 2Introduce ما (ma) as a simpler alternative: ما كتبت (I did not write) — ما + past tense verb
