Arabic Adjectives: Big, Small, Beautiful

Lesson Objectives

  • Learn 12 common Arabic adjectives
  • Understand that adjectives come after the noun in Arabic

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Describe the teacher: students call out adjectives in English — how many can be translated to Arabic?

Main Activities

  1. 1Introduce 12 adjectives with flashcards: كبير، صغير، جميل، طويل، قصير، سعيد، حزين، جديد، قديم، سريع، بطيء، ذكي
  2. 2Key rule: in Arabic, the adjective comes AFTER the noun — "بيت كبير" (house big = a big house)
  3. 3Matching activity: pair nouns with suitable adjectives and write the Arabic phrases
  4. 4Vocab cards worksheet: write each adjective with masculine and feminine forms

Masculine and Feminine Adjectives

45–50 minutes

  • Form feminine adjectives by adding ة (taa marbuta)

Spot the pattern: display 6 masculine/feminine adjective pairs — students identify what changes.

Colour Adjectives

Colour hunt: teacher calls out a colour in Arabic, students point to something of that colour in the room.

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach colour adjectives: أحمر/حمراء، أزرق/زرقاء، أخضر/خضراء، أصفر/صفراء، أبيض/بيضاء، أسود/سوداء
  2. 2Note: colour adjectives have irregular feminine forms — drill these carefully
  3. 3Description game: describe an object using colour + size adjective, partner guesses the object
