Joining Sentences Together

Lesson Objectives

  • Use conjunctions to join sentences
  • Write compound sentences in Arabic

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Sentence split: show two halves of sentences — pupils match them and identify the conjunction.

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach conjunctions: و (and), أو (or), لكن (but), ثم (then), لأن (because)
  2. 2Model compound sentences: "أحب القراءة لكن لا أحب الرياضيات" (I like reading but I don't like maths)
  3. 3Sentence combining exercise: join pairs of simple sentences using different conjunctions

Time Phrases at the Start

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Time phrase sorting: arrange time phrases in chronological order — morning to night.

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach time phrases as sentence openers: كل يوم (every day), عندما (when), بعد (after), قبل (before), في الصباح (in the morning), في المساء (in the evening)
  2. 2Model: "عندما أستيقظ، أشرب الحليب" (When I wake up, I drink milk)
  3. 3Practise: rewrite simple sentences by adding time phrases at the start
  4. 4Write 5 sentences with varied time phrase openings

Longer and Better Sentences

  • Expand sentences with details
  • Write sentences of at least 6 words

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Sentence growing: start with "آكل" (I eat) — keep adding words to make the sentence longer.

Main Activities

  1. 1Teach sentence expansion techniques: add adjectives, add where, add when, add why
  2. 2Model: "آكل" → "آكل الفطور" → "آكل الفطور اللذيذ" → "آكل الفطور اللذيذ في المطبخ كل صباح" (I eat → I eat breakfast → I eat delicious breakfast → I eat delicious breakfast in the kitchen every morning)
  3. 3Pupils expand 5 simple sentences into longer, more detailed ones
  4. 4Peer review: evaluate each other's expanded sentences
