Sixteen and Seventeen

Lesson Objectives

  • Say "sitta ashar" (16) and "sab'ata ashar" (17)
  • Count from 1 to 17 in sequence

🌅 Warm-Up (5 min)

Count from 1 to 15 together — show off your Year 2 counting skills!

Main Activities

  1. 1Introduce 16 (ستة عشر) and 17 (سبعة عشر) — spot the pattern: unit + ashar
  2. 2Counting chain around the room from 1 to 17
  3. 3Write Eastern Arabic numerals ١٦ and ١٧ — practise on whiteboards
  4. 4Number card matching: connect the numeral to the Arabic word

Speed count: how fast can the class count 1–17 in Arabic? Time it!

Main Activities

  1. 1Introduce 18 (ثمانية عشر), 19 (تسعة عشر), 20 (عشرون) — celebrate reaching 20!
  2. 2Note: 20 is "Ishruun" — a new word, not following the teen pattern
  3. 3Count to 20 together with a drumbeat — one beat per number
  4. 4Complete the tracing worksheet for numerals ١٦ through ٢٠

Reading and Writing Teen Numbers

  • Read Eastern Arabic numerals ١١–٢٠
  • Write teen numbers as words and numerals

Flash a numeral ١١–٢٠ — children write the Arabic word on whiteboards.

Main Activities

  1. 1Number dictation: teacher says Arabic numbers randomly from 11–20, children write the numeral
  2. 2Number ordering challenge: arrange cards ١١ to ٢٠ in the correct order
